Abstract
1,244,841. Flame-retardant polymer compositions. BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd. 6 June, 1968 [21 March, 1967; 7 June, 1967], Nos. 13121/67 and 26322/67. Headings C3B, C3C, and C3P. [Also in Division C2] Flame-retardant polymeric materials comprise a flammable polymeric material and a 2,2,3,3-tetrabromopropyl ester of aphosphorous or phosphoric acid or of an organic mono- or polycarboxylic acid containing only C, H, O and, if desired, halogen atoms. A compound liberating free radicals, e.g. an organic peroxide or an azo compound, may also be present. Specified polymeric materials are thermoplastics such as polyolefins, polyesters and polystyrene, especially expandable and expanded polystyrene, and thermosets such as unsaturated polyester resins and epoxy resins. Examples describe compositions wherein the polymeric material is (1-5, 12 and 13) expandable or expanded polystyrene, (containing n-pentane and/or isopentane as blowing agents) (7-9) unsaturated polyester resin optionally containing chlorinated wax, Sb 2 O 3 and silica, (10) a bisphenol-based epoxide resin containing a polyamide hardener, and (11) polypropylene.
