Abstract
1,244,505. Retexturing laundry. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 13 Aug., 1968 [14 Aug., 1967], No. 38589/68. Addition to 1,175,234. Heading D1P. [Also in Division B1] Washed laundry, e.g. cotton terry towels, underwear or bed linen, is retextured by treating it with rinsing water to which has been added a composition comprising a textile softener having the formula I in which R 1 , R 2 and Z are as defined below and one or more of: a textile softener of the formula II in which R 1 is an alkyl residue having 10-20 carbon atoms which may be interrupted by an ether oxygen atom in the vicinity of the nitrogen atom, i.e. between carbon atoms 2 and 3 or 3 and 4 counted from the nitrogen atom, R 2 is an alkyl residue having 7-21 carbon atoms, the sum of the carbon atoms present in R 1 and R 2 being 23-39, Z is the residue H 2 C-CHOH-CH 2 OH or CH 2 OH-CH-CH 2 OH and n is 3 or 4, the polyhydroxy residues present in compounds I and II optionally being etherified with further hydroxyalkyl residues, a non-oxidising water soluble anti-microbial substance free from heavy metals, an acidifying or anti-incrustation agent, an emulsifying agent or a dispersion stabilizer. The solid or liquid composition may be added to the rinse water in an amount of 0.05-2 g. per litre. Solid compositions may comprise a solid extending or diluting agent, e.g. an alkali metal salt of sulphuric acid or ortho- or pyrophosphoric acid, a surface - inactive salt of a carboxylic or hydroxy-carboxylic acid having 1-10 carbon atoms, an aminosulphonic acid salt, an aminophosphonic acid salt, urea, acetamide or a polyethyleneglycol, the solid composition being prepared by spraying a solution or dispersion of the softeners on to the finely divided carrier substance which is in solid form, by atomising an aqueous solution or suspension of the textile softeners containing the carrier or by atomising a solution or dispersion of the softeners in molten urea or polyethylene glycol. The liquid compositions may comprise solutions of the softeners in a water-soluble organic solvent, e.g. a mono or polyhydric alcohol containing 1-4 carbon atoms, an ether alcohol or a ketone, which may be dispersed in water. Suitable dispersing and emulsifying agents are alkyl benzene sulphonates, fatty alcohol sulphates, fatty alcohol glycol ether sulphates with 1-5 ethylene glycol ether residues in the molecule, fatty acid monoglycerides or polyethylene glycol ethers of fatty alcohols or alkylphenols with 5-20 ethylene glycol ether residues in the molecule and suitable emulsion stabilisers are salts of ether carboxylic acids or ether sulphonic acids of cellulose, cellulose sulphates, polyacrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid salts and water soluble polyacrylamides and polyethylene glycols. The rinsing water may also contain optical brighteners having the formula in which X is H or SO 3 H and R is or having the formula Suitable acidifying and anti-incrustation agents, aminosulphonic acid, urea compounds or ortho phosphoric acid, citric acid, polyphosphates of alkali metals and salts of nitrilotriacetic acid, ethylene diamino tetraacetic acid, N-oxethyl ethylene diamino triacetic acid and ditri- or tetraphosphonic acids. The anti-microbial substances may be formaldehyde, halogenated phenols, nitrated mono- or polyalcohols, quaternary ammonium compounds which contain linked to the nitrogen atoms an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with 8-18 carbon atoms and at least one aromatic residue or residue containing a double bond which is linked to the nitrogen atom by an aliphatic carbon atom, tertiary amines obtainable from primary or secondary amines containing up to four basic nitrogen atoms and an aliphatic or alkyl aromatic residue with 8-18 aliphatic carbon atoms by condensation with phenols and lower aliphatic aldehydes, aminocarboxylic acids, polyaminocarboxylic acids and betaines.
