Abstract
1,244,405. Separating sheets. G. SCHICK. 19 Feb., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 8868/69. Heading B8R. Sheets are separated from the top of a stack by rollers which are traversed across the upper surface of the stack to cause the upper sheets to overlap one another, the rollers being rotatable about parallel spaced-apart axes carried on an endless roller chain. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a housing 1 partially encloses a chain 2 over a stack 4 of sheets; the chain 2 is a twin roller chain having common rivets spacing them apart, every second rivet supporting a barrel-shaped freely-rotatable roller 3; the chain extends over two chain wheels 6, 7, one of which is driven so that the rollers 3 traverse across the stack 4 and feed sheets in overlapping fashion to further feed rollers (not shown). The housing 1 may be vertically movable and can be fastened to a support arm actuating limit switches controlling the tablelifting mechanism. Guide rails 8 press the rollers 3 into contact with the stack along the lower run of the chain so that the latter adopts a rectilinear or slightly curvilinear configuration bowed towards the stack. An alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), includes an endless belt (9) acting from the inside of the separating device and forming the drive for the rollers 3, the endless belt being trained around pulleys (10, 11) coaxial with chain wheels 6, 7. In this case, the rivets of the chain serve to keep the rollers 3 parallel in their traverse across the stack. A resilient rail (13) presses the rollers 3 in their upper run against belt 9 and imposes a drive on chain 2 at half the speed of the belt. The rollers 3 may be replaced by narrow discs or diametrically-bored balls. Movement of the sheets under the action of rollers 3 is also ensured in both embodiments by the weight of the housing; in the second embodiment, the rail 13 ensures that the rollers turn continuously even if the housing is lifted off the stack.
