Abstract

1,244,346. Detergent bars. COLGATE. PALMOLIVE CO. 12 Nov., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 53602/68. Heading C5D. A detergent bar comprises a blend of a puffed, water-soluble, hydratable, alkaline detergent salt and a bar-forming detergent. The puffed salt may be borax, granular sodium silicate, hydrated pentasodium tripolyphosphate, hydrated sodium carbonate or hydrated potassium carbonate. The puffed salt is prepared by heating the hydrated salt to 200-425‹ C. and passing hot air through the molten salt. The bars may be ordinary toilet soap bars or tablets; synthetic detergent toilet bars or tablets made from anionic detergents, e.g. cocomonoglyceryl sulphates, or from mixtures of synthetic detergents with soap, laundry bars containing a builder salt, e.g. pentasodium tripolyphosphate or trisodium nitrilotriacetate, and starch; and aerated detergent bars. The ingredients are mixed and fed to the hopper of the intensive sheaving and extruding device of Specification 1,155,725 while water, and if desired, air under pressure is fed to its interior. Preferably, the period of time from the initial addition of the water to the puffed salt and detergent blend is less than 10 minutes. In examples, the dry blend is (a) toilet soap chips, puffed borax, titanium dioxide (pigment) and sodium silicate (builder); (b) toilet soap chips, sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, puffed borax and sodium silicate; or (c) soda ash, pentasodium tripolyphosphate, soap chips, puffed borax, titanium dioxide; and a detergent laundry bar containing a sulphate detergent is prepared by mixing the dry blend with an acid mix containing tridecyl benzene sulphonic acid and sulphonic acid.
