Abstract

1,244,303. Hay balers. P. A. M. MURRAY, and D. CRAIG. 21 Aug., 1968 [25 Aug., 1967], No. 7203/71. Divided out of 1,244,302. Heading B5F. A pick-up baler comprises a backwardly sloping wheeled chamber provided at its rear end with a normally closed tail gate 3 and at its forward end with a packing plate 6 reciprocated by beams 18 and 23 pivoted to rotatable arms 17. Material picked up by rotary tines mounted at the forward end of the chamber is fed upwardly into the chmber in small discrete amounts by orbitally reciprocated packing fingers 14 carried by arms 17. The charges are directed into the chamber along a feed passage defined by a fixed curved panel 11 and a series of strips 12 depending from the plate 6. In operation, as each charge is forwarded into the chamber through opening 13 it is compressed by strips 12 and is moved upwardly toward the top of the chamber by the action of the succeeding charge and by the plate 6 which has a small upward component of movement. A series of vertical stacks of charges is thus built up in the chamber and the bale as it increases in size moves backwards against the pressure of twine 44 and sprung members carried by the walls of the chamber. When the chamber has been filled the twine is knotted across the feed opening 13 by a knotter unit located at X, the twine being fed to the knotter by needles 29 which reciprocate across the feed opening. Retraction of the twine needles 29 actuates a trigger 57 which releases catch 51 to allow the gate 3 to partially open under its spring biasing. As the next bale is built up, the preceding bale is forced partially out of the chamber, thus fully opening the gate and allowing the bale to be removed. After removal of the bale the gate swings shut and is latched in position whilst the rest of the succeeding bale is formed.
