Abstract
1,243,205. Binary W/Co alloys. IONIC PLATING CO. Ltd. May 16, 1969 [May 31, 1968], No.26106/68. Heading C7A and C7B. The service life of a metal working tool is increased by plating the operative surface(s) of the tool with a binary W/Co alloy containing 30 to 40% by weight of W the balance being Co. The plating layer may contain particulate metal oxides and/or carbides. In the example the alloy layer is deposited by electrolysis, with a current density of 50 A/ft<SP>2</SP>, of an alkaline solution of Co and W having a pH of around 8À5 and an operating temperature of 55‹C. with a 50% cathode efficiency. The electrolytes may be as disclosed in the examples of Specification 959,498. The plating solutions may have the particulate metal oxides and/or carbides dispersed therein. Tools specified are drills, dies and moulds.
