Abstract
124,318. Rulkens, W. J. May 4, 1918. S p e e d indicators actuated by accelerometers.-Relates to indicators of the type in which the accelerations are integrated. The horizontal speed is indicated by a pointer actuated by a roller on an acceleration pendulum, the roller being in frictional contact with a clock-driven roller which is also displaced, in a contrary direction,.by the acceleration of the aircraft. The roller 5 actuating the pointer 11 is carried by a bar 3, which is pivoted on an horizontal axis 1 and is over-weighted at 15 but supported by springs 14 attached to arms 13 on a second member. This member, also pivoted on the axis 1, carries a roller 4 which is driven by clock-work 6 and bears against the roller 5. Relative displacement of the rollers produces a driving component on the roller 5, the total rotation of which is a measure of the speed. Both rollers may be shaped as shown, so as to increase the movement of the pointer. As the apparatus indicates the actual speed only when the aircraft is flying horizontally, an attachment is provided for obtaining a true speed reading when flying at an incline. It consists of three bars, one secured at rightangles to the line of flight, a second bar hanging freely, and the third slidable along the first and at right-angles to it. The third bar being set on the first bar to the indicated horizontal speed, its intersection with the second bar will indicate the true speed.
