Abstract

1,243,052. Suspension polymerization. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 9 Jan., 1969 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 2703/68. Heading C3P. Olefinically unsaturated monomers are polymerized by suspending the monomer in an aq. medium, stabilizing the suspension with an insoluble inorganic phosphate suspending agent and 0À0001-0À0005% by wt. of a metal alkyl hydrogen phosphate containing an alkyl group with more than 10 C atoms, and polymerizing the monomer in the presence of a free radical initiator. In the example styrene is polymerized in an aq. suspension containing trisodium and disodium hydrogen orthophosphates, sodium oleyl or stearyl hydrogen phosphate, white mineral oil, calcium chloride, stearic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
