Abstract

1,242,403. Polyolefin-metal laminate. COURTAULDS Ltd. 1 Jan., 1969 [24 Nov., 1967], No.53582/67. Heading B5N. A polyolefin sheet is bonded to a metal sheet, e.g. of steel or aluminium by (a) modifying the polyolefin surface by strong oxidation, high temperature and blasting or etching as described in Specification 1,122,845, (b) coating this surface with an adhesive which adheres better to polyolefins than metals, (c) coating the metal surface with an adhesive which adheres better to metal than to polyolefin and optionally applying a further coating of the adhesive used in step (b) and (d) bringing the coated surfaces into contact preferably under pressure. The polyolefin may be homopolymer of ethylene or propylene or copolymer thereof with other olefins. The adhesive for step (b) is preferably a pressure sensitive adhesive and that used on the metal surface is preferably curable, e.g. epoxy resin or a blend of phenolformaldehyde with an elastomer such as neoprene or a nitrile rubber.
