Abstract

1,240,667. Recovering KCI from well brine. GARRETT RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Inc. 27 June, 1968 [2 May, 1968], No. 30734/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division E1] Potassium chloride is recovered from a NaCl/KCl brine by cooling said brine by indirect heat exchange with a cooling fluid to form a KCl slurry, further cooling the slurry to crystallize KCl therefrom, and separating the KCl, the remaining depleted brine being used as the cooling fluid in the indirect heat exchange step. In the preferred process (see Fig. 1), KCl is obtained by solution mining A, the brine produced being cooled in the heat exchanger B, the atmospheric crystallizer C and the refrigerative crystallizer D to - 23‹ to - 4‹ C. and the KCl separated therefrom. A heat exchange crystallizer and an atmospheric crystallizer are described (see Figs. 2-5, not shown; also in Division B1). The solvent used in solution mining may comprise at least part of the depleted brine; the said brine may be cooled to deposit part of its NaCl content, or a portion of the brine may be diluted with water, before use. The heat exchange cooling of the well brine is preferably under reduced pressure to - 21‹ to - 1‹ C. Magnesium chloride may be added to the solvent to regulate the KCl dissolution. NaCl may be recovered from the discarded portion of the depleted brine at K, F or N. The KCl/Brine slurry may be stored in underground cavities from which it may be recovered using an ultrasonic device.
