Abstract
1,239,738. Electric couplings. A. SCHIFFMANN. 27 Aug., 1969 [4 Sept., 1968], No. 42672/69. Heading H2E. A branch connection between a multi-cored main cable and a multi-cored branch cable comprises a cable sleeve through which the main cable runs and into which the branch cable enters, the sleeve comprising body and lid parts 1, 2 closable to form a sealed enclosure, the sleeve also accommodating insulation piercing contacting devices internally, the contacting devices being arranged to receive branch conductor terminations, and the branch connection being made upon or after closure of the sleeve parts. The contacting devices for penetrating the insulation of the main cable may be milling screws 11-13 providing rotating cutting edges 14-16. Non-rotating cutting edges (43-45, Fig. 3) may be located to act radially inward of the main cable. Alternatively cutting edges (67-69, Fig. 5) may be provided on wedges (64-66) inserted between the main cable conductors to act radially outwards. A. pressure screw extending through the sleeve causes the cutting edges to penetrate the insulation of the main cable. Cutting edges (76-78; 80, 81 and 84, Fig. 5) of insulating material may be provided for mechanical location or for gripping of the conductors. Springs 24-26 may be provided for maintenance of electrical connection between the contacting devices and the main cable. The sleeve may be filled with a sealing or insulating compound. Bunched-up strings 34, 35 of the wrapping wires of the main cable are connected via a terminal (36, Fig. 2) to similar bunched-up strings of the branch cable. The embodiment of Figs. 7-8 (not shown) differ from the rest of the embodiments in that branch connection is effected upon closing of the sleeve instead of by a later tightening of the pressure screws.
