Abstract
1,239,654. Harpsichords. R. A. HANDS. 24 Feb., 1970 [26 Feb., 1969], No. 10237/69. Heading G5J. A plectrum for a harpsichord or a similar automatic musical instrument is rigidly fixed to a bar capable of substantial torsional strain about an axis roughly parallel with the string, but relatively rigid under bending stress, the bar being mounted for rotation about an axis approximately perpendicular to the string and to the plectrum. The triangular plectrum 15 having a horizontal face 16 is mounted on a bar 8 extending from a boss 6 on a screw 2 in the key 1. As the key is depressed, pressure of the surface 16 on the string 18 twists the bar 8 until the plectrum slips past the string to sound it. On release of the key, pressure on the sloping side 17 of the plectrum overcomes the spring 13 to slide the plectrum past the string without sounding. A stop 11 screwed into register bar 12 determines the degree of engagement of the plectrum with the string and hence the loudness of the note. The mechanism may be arranged on the opposite side of the key pivot to strike with an upward movement or may be actuated through an intermediate mechanism.
