Abstract

1,238,488. Spin-drawing filaments. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 April, 1969 [27 May, 1968], No. 25159/68. Heading B5B. In the continuous spin drawing of filaments, films and yarns melt spun from water-absorbing polymers (defined as polymers that absorb more water in the solid state than in the molten state), the product is treated with a spin finish containing more than 10% and up to 30% by weight of water, preferably 12 to 25% by weight of water, immediately before passing to at least two drawing stages, the draw ratio of the first stage being in the range 1À15 to 3À0, especially 1À15 to 1À25. Suitable spin finishes are given as comprising by weight: (Ex. 3) Coconut oil 52%; " Lubrol MOX " (Registered Trade Mark), a non-ionic surfactant, 39%; sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, 7À5%; "AHas T.L. 2995 " (Registered Trade Mark), a quaternary ammonium compound, 1À5%. (Ex. 7) Hexadecyl stearate 50%; sulphated olive oil, 25%; " AHas T.L. 2995 " (Registered Trade Mark), 12À5%; " Lubrol MOX " (Registered Trade Mark), 12À5%. (Ex. 9) " Empilon " (Registered Trade Mark) mixed with the desired proportions of water. The examples refer to a nominally 840 denier 140 filament yarn of either nylon 66 or a nylon 6/nylon 66 random copolymer to which copper as copper acetate (60 p.p.m.) and iodine as potassium iodide (1500 p.p.m.) has been added. The spin finish is applied to the yarn by means of a conventional finish applicator and the yarn is drawn by means of a series of drawing rollers, around which the yarn is wound several times, interspaced by means of heated snubbing pins around which the yarn is wound once, the peripheral speeds of the rollers increasing along the series.
