Abstract

1,236,779. Moulding abrasive tools. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 5 Nov., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 52396/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C4] An abrasive tool is made by compacting together at an elevated temperature a mixture of metal-coated diamond or borazon particles and a granular heat hardenable resin, the pressure being maintained substantially constant until densification is completed. Preferably the compacting pressure is at least 10,000 p.s.i. and the temperature is held constant during the pressing cycle. The metal coating preferably comprises 30-80% of the weight of the coated diamond or borazon particles and the metal may be copper, nickel, gold, silver, aluminium, cobalt, titanium, tantalum, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium, niobium or alloys of these metals. The resin is preferably phenol-formaldehyde, but may be rubber, shellac, melamine-formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde, epoxy, polyester, polyamide or polyimide. A filler such as silicon carbide may also be incorporated in the mixture.
