A gas/liquid contact tray of the type having at least one opening covered by a valve cap mounted for movement away from and towards the tray in response to upward fluid pressure, has a valve cap formed with one or more upwardly convergent passages 4. As shown in Fig. 2 the marginal edge of the cap is corrugated but it may be flat or provided with downwardly extending tabs to prevent the valve cap touching the plate. Alternatively this may be prevented by strips secured to the plate around an opening. As shown in Fig. 5 the cap is dished and outwardly-facing openings 13 are provided in addition to the upwardly convergent openings.
