The cylinder of an internal combustion engine is lubricated by means of a pump 7, Fig. 1, which forces lubricant to a hole 3 in a cylinder liner 2, via a line 6, an inclined bore 10 in the liner 2 and a device 5. The line 6 contains an accumulator which may be a resilient hose 20, Fig. 2, or a cylinder 41, Fig. 5, having a spring-biased piston 43 therein. The device 5 comprises a tube 13, Fig. 2, one end of which is attached to the outside of a cylinder block 1 by means of flanges 15, 16 and screws (not shown), and the other end of which enters a bore in the liner 2 and is selaed by a member 14. The tube 13 is cooled by means of water in a chamber 8 of the block 1 and contains a tube 17, one end of which is connected to the line 6 by means of a connection 19, and the other end of which is connected to the bore 10 by means of a screw-threaded portion 18 of the tube 17. The portion 18 contains a valve member 30, Fig. 3, the movement of which is limited by a stud 33 having a bore 32 therein. In use a metered amount of lubricant is supplied by the pump 7 to the hole 3 in the liner 2 and is permitted to pass through the hole 3 when the pressure in the liner cylinder is lower than the pressure of the lubricant. When the pressure in the liner cylinder is higher than the pressure of the lubricant, the valve member 30 is urged against its seat 31. Pressurized lubricant supplied by the pump 7, is stored in the accumulator 20, Fig. 2, or 41, Fig. 5, until the pressure in the liner cylinder drops below the pressure of the lubricant.
