Abstract

123,567. British United Shoe Machinery Co., (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Feb. 22, 1918. Boot-sole sewing - machines; welting and turnshoe. - In in. seam boot or shoe sewing-machines, such as described in Specifications 17328/08 and 20712/09, back-gauge actuating mechanism of the kind comprising an advancing spring and a retracting power-operated one-way clutch is modified so that the advance of the gauge into contact with the work under the influence of the spring is always under control with the object of avoiding hammering of the gauge on the work. The mechanism comprises a link 54 connecting the back-gauge to a slide 52 and embraced by a box 66 which is reciprocated by a cam-actuated lever 60 and link 78, and is provided with a. spring-pressed clutch roller 72 and a, pivoted trip lever 80 for releasing the clutch at the desired times. The trip lever is actuated at the end of the retracting movement of the gauge by contact with a fixed abutment 84, and the slide 52 is advanced by the actuating spring till an abutment 96 on the slide comes in contact with an extension of the pin 100 connecting the camlever to the link 78. The subsequent advancing movement of the gauge into contact with the work is performed under the influence of the spring and is controlled by the contact of the abutment 96 and pin 100. A trip plate 94 may be provided to release the clutch at or near the forward end of the movement of the gauge, and a second abutment 98 may be provided on the slide 52 to prevent undue rearward movement of the back-gauge. The gauge 24 is provided on the forward end of a lever 30 which is adjustably connected by an eccentric pivot 42 to a lever 32 pivoted on the machine frame at 34 and adjustably connected to the actuating link at 58. The rear-end of the lever 30 is guided in a downwardly and forwardly inclined slot 40 which, in conjunction with the position of the pivot 34 of the link 32, maintains the gauge in proper operative relation with the needle in all positions in which it may engage with the work. The advancing spring is relatively weak and is shown at 44 coiled round a stud on the frame, and engaging with its upper end a pin 46 on the lever 30. The gauge is locked in engagement with the work in the. usual way by a cam-actuated wedge 102 which forces a roller 104 into engagement with the slide 52, and cramp it in its guide.
