Abstract

1,235,667. Prolonged release medicaments. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 8 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967; 15 May, 1968], Nos. 33255/67 and 23146/68. Heading A5B. An injectable medicament having prolonged release is formulated by preparing a primary water-in-oil emulsion containing a watersoluble, sparing oil-soluble, active substance (which is not solely or primarily antigenic) and another physiologically acceptable substance, e.g. NaCl or glucose, in the aqueous phase, the quantities thereof being such that the osmolarity of the aqueous medium and internal phase volume of the emulsion, together with the concentration of detergent used to prepare the emulsion are so selected that prolonged release of the active substance is achieved in vivo when the primary emulsion is injected in the form of a double emulsion in an outermost aqueous phase. A wide range of active substances are referred to including antibiotics, vitamins, chemotherapeutics, anti-coagulants and alkaloids.
