Abstract
1,234,517. Electron -guns.- ALCATEL-. HEURTEY. 28 April, :1969 '[26 April; .1968].. No. 21461/69. Heading H1D. An electron gun includes both a screen grid in contact with the emissive surface of the cathode, and an extraction grid the apertures of which are aligned with those of the screen grid and which is located between the -screen. grid and the anode, such that when increasingly positive potentials are applied to the cathode, the extraction grid, and the anode,.respectively, the electrons pass .through the grid apertures without impinging on the extraction grid, and thereafter merge into a single collimated beam. The thermionic cathode 1 is supported at the end of a- .metal tube 2 and is heated, either directly by, or by electron bombardment from, a filament 4 mounted within -a úurther metal - tube 7. A grid 10-which may be of honeycomb form (Fig. 2, not shown )-and a second similar.grid 15 is mounted in a ring 11 and metal cylinder 12. The'cathode, the grid 15,-and. the anode 17, are held at successively higher positive potentials, such that .the elementary electron beams issuing from grid 15 are converged to form a single" parallel beam, while grid 10 also ,prevents the emission of such electrons as would impact the grid 15. The cathode and grid 10 may together be-constituted by a matrix of non-emissive material into which an array of pellets of emissive material .is embedded, or grid 10 may be coated on the cathode surface.
