Abstract

1,234,378. Ferromagnetic particles. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. June 24, 1969 [June 25, 1968], No.31958/69. Headings C7A and C7D. Ferromagnetic particles having a maximum dimension of 4 microns, and preferably acicular, comprise Fe, Ni and/or Co; 0-20% by weight Cr; and B, N and/or P in amount less than the minimum required to form a compound with all of the metal, the particles having a polyphase structure with metal as one phase and a compound or compounds of the metal(s) with B, N and/or P as at least one additional phase, the particles being coated with a thin oxide film. The particles are produced by precipitation from solutions of Fe, Ni and/or Co salts, optionally containing Cr salts, using borohydride, hypophosphite or hydrazine as reducing agents, optionally with PdCl 2 as catalyst, and preferably in a magnetic field: the resulting particles may be heated in hydrogen and then in an inert gas containing oxygen. The particles may be compacted, optionally with binders, to form permanent magnets. Alternatively, they may be mixed with a film-forming binder and coated on to a substrate to form a magnetic recording member.
