[Also in Division H1] Polymers suitable as insulating coatings for wires comprise recurring units of formula where Ar is aromatic, Ar<SP>1</SP> is aliphatic or aromatic, Ar<SP>11</SP> is aromatic and Y is CO or SO 2 at least some Y's being SO 2 in the second formula. The polymer may be prepared by heating a polyamide having recurring units of formula which may in turn be prepared from the corresponding diamine-diamide and di- or tetracarboxylic acid. Dicarboxylic acids specified include isophthalic acid and bis-(4-oarboxyphenyl) ether. Tetracarboxylic acids specified include pyromellitic acid and bis- ( 3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) ketone. Diamine-diamides specified include 1,4-diamino, 2,5-disulphonamidobenzene, 2,6 - diamino, 3,7 - disulphonamidonaphthalene, bis - (3 - sulphonamido - 4 - aminophenyl), bis- (3 - sulphonamido - 4 - aminophenyl) methane, bis - (3 - carbonamido - 4 - aminophenyl) ether and bis - (3 - sulphonamido - 4 - aminophenyl) ether. The di- or tetracarboxylic acid may be used as its halide derivative and the reaction may be carried out in a solvent, e.g. N-methylpyrolidone, dimethylacetamide, dimethyl formamide, dimethylsulphonide, hexamethylphosphoramide or tetramethylene sulphone containing LiCl or MgCl 2 , cooled in an ice-bath. A branched polymer may be produced by including trimesic acid in the reaction mixture. The polyamide solution produced may be applied to a wire and heated to remove solvent and cyclize the polyamide.
