Abstract
1,234,080. Oxidation catalysts. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 7 June, 1968 [12 June, 1967], No. 27279/68. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] A catalyst composition comprises a carrier upon which are supported (A) at least one member selected from the metals ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, iridium and platinum, (B) at least one member selected from the fluorides, chlorides and bromides of the metals lithium, potassium, rubidium and caesium and, optionally but preferably, (C) at least one member selected from the metals copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt and nickel and the oxides and chlorides thereof. The carrier may be active carbon, silicon carbide, silica, silica-alumina, alumina, alumina-boria, boria or titania. The atomic ratio (A):(B), expressed in terms of the metals, preferably is 1:0.1 to 100; if and when (C) is present, the atomic ratio (A):(C), expressed in terms of the metals, preferably is 1:0.01 to 100. Numerous catalysts compositions, together with methods for the preparation thereof, are disclosed in the Specification in which reference also is made to various prior-art catalyst compositions. The catalyst composition may be used in the preparation of vinyl acetate by a process which comprises subjecting a gas mixture containing ethylene, acetic acid and a molecular oxygencontaining gas to a catalytic gas phase reaction at a temperature of from 50‹C to 300‹C.
