Abstract
1,233,553. Waveguide rotating joints and coupling arrangements. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 Oct., 1968 [14 July, 1967], No. 32594/67. Heading H1W. A symmetrical, four-port rotating joint of the so-called " slip ring " type is used to provide simultaneously two signal paths. The joint is of the type comprising three coaxial E-plane waveguide rings with common narrow walls between the outer rings and the middle ring, the latter being split along its median plane to allow relative rotation between the two halves of the assembly. The common narrow walls are provided with slots arranged to provide zero db. coupling between the outer and the middle rings. Normally, one end of an outer ring provides an input connection, the other end being terminated by a matched dissipative load. The other outer ring is similarly provided with output and load. According to the invention, the dissipative loads are replaced by a further input and output to give the arrangement shown in the self-explanatory Figure. The output loads U1 U2 may be aerials and the sources 81, S2 may be TR devices. Alternatively, the sources and loads may comprise multiplexing devices for combining and distributing several frequency channels. The signals in the two paths may be in the same or in different pass-bands of the rotating joint. Several such joints may be stacked coaxially and used e.g. in a stacked radar aerial system.
