Abstract

1,232,684. Extrusion; extrusion-blow-moulding. E. I. VALYI. 31 May, 1968 [1 June, 1967; 26 March, 1968], No. 26286/68. Heading B5A. Hollow articles, having oriented side walls, are made by supporting a blank by its rim over the aperture in an apertured member, engaging the side of the blank not contacted by the member with a plug, and applying pressure to the rim portion of the blank to extrude it through the gap defined between the plug and the wall of the aperture. In the embodiment shown in the Figure, the blank which comprises central and rim portions 10 and 11, is supported over the aperture in a die 15 and the portion 11 is extruded between the wall 16 of the aperture and a plug 22, by an annular plunger 23 slidable about the plug. The portion 10 of the blank may initially be supported by a plunger 12 which during the extrusion is forced back against a biasing spring by pressure fluid introduced within the article through passages 27. As shown in the Figure the extruded blank may subsequently be blow moulded into a housing 17. In other embodiments, the appropriate portions of the die and annular plunger are shaped to give a configured rim to the article. In a further embodiment, collapse of the extruded blank is prevented by providing the plug with a fluid-actuable sleeve which is forwarded in synchrony with the extrusion (see Fig. 4).
