Episulphide monomers are polymerized by contact with (a) catalysts which are the reaction products of zinc or cadmium compounds and organic compounds having at least one thiol group, and in the presence of (b) organic compounds having at least one thiol group. In examples propylene episulphide is polymerized; the catalysts (a) are the zinc and cadmium dimercaptides of N-bis-(2-mercaptoethyl) ethylamine, the zinc dimercaptide of propane-1,2,3- trithiol, cadmium bis-(alkyl mercaptide), the zinc and cadmium dimercaptides of ethane dithiol and the cadmium mercaptide of the adduct of 2 moles of propylene episulphide and 1 mole of n-butylamine; the organic compounds (b) are N-bis-(2-mercaptoethyl) ethylamine, propane - 1,2,3 - trithiol, 2,4,6 - tris - [N - butyl - 2- (2-mercaptopropylthio) propylamino] - s - triazine, 1,1,2 - trimethylol ethane - tris - (mercaptopropionate), pentaerythritol tetrathioglycolate, 1,1,2 - trimethylol ethane - tris - (mercaptoglycolate), 2,4,6 - tris - (N - butyl - 2 - mercaptopropylamino) - s - triazine, ethane dithiol, tris-(2-mercapto-ethyl) amine and the adduct of 2 moles of propylene episulphide and 1 mole of n-butyl-amine. Other episulphides mentioned are ethylene episulphide, butylene episulphide, 1,5-hexadiene monoepisulphide, alkyl thioglycidyl ether, cyclohexene episulphide and styrene episulphide.
