Abstract

1,232,500. Mould lubricants; continuous casting. BERKENHOFF & CO. K.G. 23 Dec., 1968, No. 61044/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C1, C3 and C5] A metal is (continuously) cast in a mould comprising graphite in which is dispersed a lubricant comprising a glass or flux (e.g. 2-30% by weight) which softens or melts below the solidification of the metal melt. When casting light metals, e.g. Al, at about 700‹ C., the lubricant has a softening temperature below 600‹ C., e.g. a glass having a low proportion of silica, a lead glass or a mixture of an alkali metal fluoride and a boron compound. When casting copper alloys at about 1000‹ C. or more, a glass having a high proportion of boric oxide, a glass containing aluminium oxide, a glass having a low silica content, a mixture of an alkali metal fluoride and a boron compound or an alkali metal fluoride is used. When casting steel, calcium fluoride or glasses rich in silica may be used.
