Abstract
1,232,173. Hydrodesulphurization. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 18 Nov., 1969, No. 56356/69. Heading C5E. Residual oils are hydrodesulphurized while substantially in the liquid phase and containing dissolved hydrogen by radial flow through a fixed bed of catalyst. The reaction is carried out at 350-475‹ C. and 50-350 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> using a catalyst such as Ni and/or Co together with W or Mo as the metals, oxides or sulphides on an oxidic support, e.g. alumina which can contain boron phosphate, phosphorus, F or Cl, or on a support of zeolite Y. Suitable feeds are atmospheric or vacuum residues which can have been deasphalted or catalytically hydrofined, black oils, visbreaker effluents and tar sand oil. 5-30 volumes of the desulphurized product containing 0À05-2À5 wt. per cent H 2 S can be recycled per volume of fresh feed. The cylindrical radial flow reactor 35 comprises a perforated catalyst support 45 through which the liquid feed from the inlet 36a passes into the catalyst bed 47. The feed passes from the catalyst bed into the perforated central tube 39 and out of the exit 37a. The spaces 53 and 54 can be filled with ceramic or aluminium balls, glass beads and/or marble chips and space 53 serves to dissolve the hydrogen in the liquid feed. Alternatively the feed can be passed through the bed from the central tube 39 and out through the catalyst support 45 and the passage 36a.
