A device for filling vessels with measured quantities of liquid includes a reservoir 6 and attached measuring cylinder 1, the latter containing a piston 2 mounted on a rod 3 for limited sliding movement, the rod also sliding on the cylinder and having a discharge tube 9 and tubes 11, 13 extending above the liquid level in the reservoir. In the position shown, liquid flows from the reservoir through a passage 12 into the cylinder to fill it. A long necked vessel 8 is raised by the usual means on known filling machines into a centering collar 7 on the rod 3 and raises the latter against a spring 15. The passage 12 is blocked as the rod solid portion shown enters it, the rod moves relative to the piston, held by a spring 14, to open a passage 10. Later the piston is engaged by a shoulder on the rod and carried with it, and liquid is forced from the cylinder through the passage 10 and tube 9 into the vessel. Air escapes from the vessel via the centre of the rod and passage 11. As the vessel descends, piston and rod follow it. Initially any liquid above the end of the tube 9 is sucked back into the cylinder and then the position shown is again reached. Air from the cylinder excapes via passages 13 during filling through the passage 12. Variable length collars 21 may be placed in the cylinder to vary the amount dispersed.
