Abstract

1,231,931. Thiocyanates. BUCKMAN LABORATORIES Inc. 5 March, 1969 [21 Aug., 1968], No. 11808/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] Novel thiocyanates of the general formula wherein X is -O-, -NH- or -S-; R is H, a halogen atom, alkyl, nitro or hydroxyl group; n is 1 or 2 and Y is are prepared by treating a compound of general formula with an oxidizing agent. The reaction is preferably performed in an inert solvent such as acetic acid using peracetic acid as the oxidizing agent. In the examples 2-(thiocyanomethylsulphinyl) - and 2 - (thiocyanomethylsulphonyl) - benzothiazole, benzoxazole and benzimidazole are prepared and the 5-chloro-, 5,6- and 4,6 dichloro-derivatives of the benzothiazole compounds. 2 - (Thiocyanomethylthio) - benzothiazole, the 5-chloro-, 5,6-dichloro- and 4,6-dichloro-derivatives and the corresponding unsubstituted benzimidazole and benzoxazole compounds are prepared by adding sodium ethoxide to the required 2-mercapto-compound and reacting the sodium salt so formed with chloromethylthiocyanate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,129,575.
