Abstract
1,231,435. Consuming noxious gases; thermal regenerators. STRUTHERS SCIENTIFIC & INTERNATIONAL CORP. 2 July, 1969 [5 July, 1968], No. 32225/68. Headings F4B and F4K. An afterburner arrangement, for combusting contaminated or polluted gases supplied under pressure by a fan (10, Fig. 1) through an inlet chamber 20, incorporates a rotary regenerator disc 22 located across the top of a combustion chamber 16. The disc 22, which is made of a refractory heat transfer material having a plurality of triangular through passages (46, Fig. 7) therein and which is heated by the exhaust gases leaving the combustion chamber 16 via outlet chamber 35, serves to preheat the incoming contaminated gases up to the required temperature. Seals 36 and 37 are provided to minimize leakage of gas around the disc. A partition 39 separates the inlet and exhaust chambers. Air for combustion, if necessary, is supplied to the chamber 16 from a manifold (201, Fig. 8) suitably located above the disc such that the air also serves to purge the passages in the disc. Fuel gas for combustion can be introduced through a line 50 to a burner 52 in the chamber 16, if required. Alternatively the fuel gas may be introduced through an injector 60 located upstream of the regenerator disc 22. The disc is mounted on shafts 23, 24, the shaft 24 being hollow and supplied with cooling air by way of line 31. A labyrinth seal (25, Fig. 5) surrounds the bottom of the shaft 24.
