Abstract

123,110. Joel, H. F. Oct. 16, 1917. Electrodes; separators.-In a cast-metal grid having two sets of vertical bars 1, 2 in staggered relation, as shown in Fig. 1, and connected together by ledges 4, the bars of one or both sets are of segmental, triangular, or crescent shape in cross-section, the flat or concave faces of the bars in one set being disposed towards the bars of the other set. The bars are connected at the top to a common member having a terminal lug and openings corresponding to the spaces 9 which allow for expansion of the active material. The ledges 4 are recessed behind the bars 2 to provide channels between the electrode and the surrounding separator. In a modification, one of the vertical sets of bars consists of round wires. Fig. 8 shows in plan a flat electrode having triangular bars. Fig. 12 shows a quadrant-shaped electrode. Four such electrodes, two positive and two negative, may be grouped together to form a complete battery. Fig. 14 shows a complete cell having electrodes as shown in Fig. 1, a perforated metal tube 8 in the centre being connected to the inner electrode, the outer electrode 19 being covered on both sides with perforated sheet lead. The separator 10 projects below the electrode and is formed with openings 10<a> containing rubber pads 13 which support the electrodes. The cell is provided with a cover 15 as described in Specification 1525/15.
