Abstract
1,231,093. Induction coupled plasma generators. HUMPHREYS CORP. 11 Sept., 1968 [14 Sept., 1967], No. 43184/68. Heading H5H. An induction coupled plasma generator includes a main gas injector assembly 14, a stabilizing, transition channel structure 80 extending into the arc region and a coaxial auxiliary gas injector structure 89 for introducing an auxiliary gas in an annular sheath around the arc 142. Assembly 14 has a mixer bend 40 with a main passageway 43 and three axially extending gas flow passages 26, 28, 30, with discharge ports 54, 47 and 56, respectively. Auxiliary gas injector structure 89 has passages 90, 92, for introducing gas in an annular stream around the main gas stream from assembly 14. Induction coil 64 surrounds a quartz tube 66 in a housing 62 with passages for coolant fluid. Alternatively, the plasma chamber comprises a ring of closely spaced copper tubes 182, Fig. 4, and Fig. 5 (not shown), through which coolant fluid passes. The induction coil 64 is supplied from an oscillator 210 via a blocking capacitor 218, and the main tank circuit includes capacitors 220, 222, an adjustable inductor coil 224 and coil 64. Connected to the grid 226 are a capacitor 228 and a continuously variable inductance 230. Plasma initiation is by insertion of a graphite rod into the plasma chamber. Particulate material is processed using a special nozzle 140<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 10 (not shown), or chemical reactions are undertaken. Specifications 1,223,455, 1,231,094 and 1,231,095 are referred to.
