In a roller conveyer for pallets, Fig. la, wheels 2 on support rails 1 are driven by a single chain 6 and by a V-belt 3 on each side of the conveyer. For conveying at higher speeds, a number of belts are used on each side and two chains (6) engaging speed-increasing transmissions (8) are provided, Figs. 2a-2c (not shown). In Fig. 3 a tyre 13 for a driven wheel includes an elastic inner member 14 of which an annulus 16 is normally spaced from the body of the wheel. Compression of the tyre when loaded by a pallet 18 is limited by engagement of the annulus 16 with the wheel body. A portion 20 of a cover 19 for the drive belts 3 may be hinged. To provide for the smooth transfer of pallets from the horizontal to an upward slope, the shafts of the wheels are arranged closer, Fig. 10 (not shown). Two additional rows of drive wheels (52) may be fitted. When the conveyer includes steeply inclined sections additional drive wheels (40) engage the top edge of the pallets, Figs. 7a, 7b (not shown). At curved sections of the conveyer, Figs. 8a, 8b( not shown), guide pulleys (44) for the drive belts are provided and, for sharp bends, there is slower drive for the wheels on the inside of the bend. In Figs. 9a-9c (not shown), a motor (45) drives the wheels via a free wheel mechanism (48) which, if the motor is stopped, allows a drive chain (47) to continue to move. Pallets 18.-These have bottom surfaces 21 for support by the wheels 2, the base 24 at its four corners being provided with tyred rollers 27 for engagement with the support rails 1. Brackets 28 on which the rollers 27 are mounted have surfaces 32 which may slidably engage flanges 30 of the rails 1. The pallets have buffers 25 which also serve to form a gap 26 between pallets to facilitate stacking and unstacking.
