Abstract
1,230,857. Pipe couplings. VICKERS Ltd. 4 Dec., 1969 [18 Dec., 1968], No. 60237/68. Heading F2G. In an end-to-end pipe coupling, a sleeve 7 surrounds two ferrules 3, 4, attached to pipe ends 1, 2 respectively, the ferrules each having a circumferential groove 3a, 4a accepting an O- ring 5, 6 and one or more circumferential grooves or tangential slots 3b, 4b, with corresponding holes in the sleeve to accept pins 8, to axially retain the ferrules. The pins 8 are of C- cross-section and are sprung so that they are retained in the holes under compression. Alternatively, the pins are solid and have screwthreaded heads to engage threads in the holes, Fig. 4 (not shown), or they have slotted heads to accept binding wire wrapped around the sleeve, Fig. 5 (not shown), or they have cross holes in the heads to accept binding wire, split pins or taper pins, Fig. 6 (not shown). The ferrules 3, 4 are attached to the pipe ends 1, 2 by silver brazing or similar methods. The pipes may be relatively inclined a small amount, and if this is required under high-pressure conditions, anti-extrusion washers are fitted with the O- rings 5, 6, and the free ends of the ferrules 3, 4 have removable flanges.
