Abstract
1,229,635. Ultrasonic inspection devices. G. PETTINATO. 5 Dec., 1968 [7 Dec., 1967], No. 57797/68. Heading H4D. In a method for inspecting wheels while fitted to railway vehicles, a rotating wheel is scanned by an ultrasonic probe assembly which is slidingly coupled with the wheel but is kept stationary with respect to the vehicle body. The probe assembly shown comprises a transducer in a mount 12 which allows the transducer to be turned to select the beam direction. The transducer is sprung against inner face 14 of wheel rim 13. Mount 12 carries conical rollers 34, 35 which engage the wheel flange 36. The position of the rollers is adjustable by a screw mechanism so that the optimum radial position of the transducer relative to the wheel can be selected; this adjustment is assisted by a pointer arranged to contact the wheel running surface. Mount 12 is supported by brackets 11, 15, 16 which have guides 29, 30 for the said radial adjustment and which carry rollers 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 engaging the wheel rim. Bracket 11 is fixed to the vehicle body by a tie-rod (not shown); alternatively the probe assembly is fixed to an independent vehicle with means for keeping it in rolling engagement with both the wheel being inspected and the rail. Flaw echo signals may be observed on an oscilloscope and flaw magnitude may be assessed.
