Abstract

[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises benzo[b]thiophene either (a) substituted by (B) 0-1 -Y where B is C 1-4 alkylene and Y is (and their N-alkyl, -aryl, -carboxyalkyl or -carboxyaryl derivatives), wherein R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or aryl (but not Et when B is present and is 3-CHg and the benzothiophene is substituted by 2-Me or is otherwise unsubstituted), R<SP>2</SP> is H, alkyl or aryl, or (b) containing a 5-membered N-containing ring (fused to the thiophene ring) optionally substituted by alkyl or aryl and optionally N-substituted by 1-2 alkyl, cycloalkyl (but not by a single cyclohexyl when the benzothiophene is otherwise unsubstituted), hydroxyalkyl, haloalkyl, aralkyl, anidiuo or guanidino groups, or 2 such N-substituents form with the N a spiro ring (but not piperidino or morpholino when the benzothiophene is otherwise unsubstituted); and in both cases the benzothiophene is optionally substituted by halogen, alkoxy, alkyl, haloalkyl, carboxyl, carboxyalkyl, carboxyaryl, nitro, cyano, amino, alkylamino, haloalkylamino, acylamino, arylacylamino or aryloxyacylamino, and includes acid addition salts and quaternary ammonium derivatives thereof. Compounds (a) are prepared by substantially standard operations commencing with the corresponding benzothiophene substituted by (B) 0-1 -CN or (B) 0-4 -NH 2 ; compounds (b) are prepared by reacting a 2,3-di(halomethyl)benzothiophene with the appropriate amine.
