Abstract

1,229,542. Plate heat exchangers. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG - NURNBERG A.G. 11 April, 1969, No. 18748/69. Heading F4S. A cross-flow plate heat exchanger comprises a shell 10 containing a stack of matrices 5 separated from one another by baffles 8 extending generally to the shell wall but being cut away along two chordal areas (15 and 16, Figs. 2, 3) at right-angles to each other to permit passage of the fluids from one matrix to the next, the flow direction of the respective fluids being reversed in adjacent matrices. A matrix consists of layers of passages 1 and the heatexchanging fluids respectively flow in adjacent layers of the passages 1 which layers are disposed at right-angles to each other. Each matrix consists of a stack of elements with each element consisting of a corrugated secondary surface sandwiched between heat transfer walls 2, 3. The assembly is braced by corner strips 9 and is bonded, e.g. brazed together. The casing has inlet and outlet connections 11, 12 for a heating fluid such as a gas, and 13, 14 for an unspecified fluid to be heated.
