Abstract

1,228,775. Loud-speakers. ACOUSTICAL MFG. CO. Ltd, 6 June, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 26151/67. Heading H4J. An electrostatic loud-speaker has a plurality of coplanar, separately electrical drivable sections. All the sections either share a single membrane or have coplanar membranes. All are substantially acoustically transparent over a given range of frequencies. In use a uniform polarizing charge is established on the membrane or membranes of all the sections. An electrical network has input terminals and includes the loud-speaker sections as parallel components. Constant current drive of the network is effected. As described, a circular diaphragm 1 is supported between concentric, perforated, rigid plate electrodes 2, 3 whereby separately energizable loud-speaker sections are formed. The various sections are connected by impedances 4 to form an electrical network. The series branches of the network may delay and/or attenuate the signal voltages applied to the individual parallel components so that the total radiating area and/or its effective phase contour varies with frequency. In use the diaphragm 1 is connected to a polarizing voltage source 5. Charge uniformity is effected by distributing a high resistance (shown as 6) in the diaphragm itself. Acoustic transparency is obtained by appropriate selection of diaphragm tension and mass. The vector sum of the currents in the individual sections (i.e. the total current at the input terminals of the network) is controlled by a resistor 7 which samples the current flowing to the electrodes 2 of all the sections and develops a feedback voltage. This is applied via line 8 as feedback to the amplifier (not shown). The total current is thereby made proportional to the input signal. Complete and automatic control of axial response may be obtained over a wide frequency range.
