Abstract
1,228,318. Gas analysis. GEORGIA TECH RESEARCH INSTITUTE. June 11, 1969, No.29537/69. Heading G1B . Apparatus for collecting particulate matter from a gas stream comprises a housing 1 containing a motor 10 for driving a shaft 11 with a turntable 12, and a sample collecting substrate disc 13 being disposed on the turn-table, a gas inlet fitting 5 with a tube 6 to pass gas to be sampled through a heater 8 to impinge on the periphery of the disc 13, the gas leaving by way a gap 14 round the edge of the turn-table 12 to enter a cooling chamber 21 wherein it is mixed with cooling air entering via vents 20 in the walls of the housing 1, the gases then passing to a chamber 22 containing a fan 17 by way of a conduit 15 the inlet of which is disposed adjacent, the underside of the turn-table 12 in alignment with the tube 6 so that the gas stream entering the conduit 15 effectively cools the turn-table 12 and disc 13. The temperature gradient caused by the heading of the gas in the tube 6 and the cooling of the turn-table 12 causes particulate matter in the gas to be deposited as a strip on the rotating disc 13, and this gives a representative sample per unit of time which may easily be adjusted by altering the speed of rotation of the turn-table 12.
