[Also in Division Cl] An exothermic chemical reaction is carried out by passing a preheated fluid reactant stream 28 to the nozzle (or nozzles) of injector system 5 which draws in part of the product stream 6 from the reaction zone 7, passing the composite stream of reactant and recycled product through line 10 into reaction zone 7, and injecting cool reactant from line 8 into the nozzle (or nozzles) of system 5, or into recycle line 6, or into line 10. As shown, the non-recycled product from zone 7 is cooled in heat-exchanger 4 and then passed to the injector system 11 of a second reaction, zone 12, which is also operated with partial product recycle and with temperature control by means of cool reactant. As applied to the synthesis of ammonia, the reactant stream comprises a compressed mixture of H 2 and N 2 , and zones 7 and 12 each contain a layer of catalyst. There is also a third catalytic reaction zone 18, but this is not operated with productrecycle. The effluent from zone 18 (i.e. ammonia product) is cooled in heat-exchangers 19 and 2, and withdrawn from the system through outlet 24. The initial feed mixture 1 is preheated by passing it through heat-exchanger 2, the heat-exchange tubes 3 of reaction zone 18, heat-exchanger 4, and electrical preheater 25; the preheated feed then flows to injector system 5. Cooling water is passed into the coils of heat-exchangers 17 and 19; and hot water and/or steam is discharged therefrom.
