Thymol is obtained by alkylating m-cresol with propylene at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of Al m-cresylate as catalyst and vacuum distilling the reaction product to separate a head fraction containing essentially unconverted m-cresol, a thymol fraction, and still bottoms containing predominantly di- and tri-alkylated products and Al m-cresylate, additional quantities of thymol may be obtained by heating together the head fraction and the still bottoms. Examples are given.
