Abstract
1,227,918. Fuel injectors. SULZER BROS. Ltd. Nov.3, 1969 [Nov. 5, 1968], No.53780/69. Heading F1B. An I.C. engine fuel injection system includes a valve needle 3 guided in a housing bore, a front fuel chamber 6 at the needle valve and adjacent the valve seat 4, a rear fuel chamber 13 at the remote end of the needle which is connected by a throttle duct 14 to a duct 7 connecting the front chamber 6 to a fuel reservoir 8 and a hydraulically operated control valve operated by a control pressure which is less than the fuel injection pressure to connect the rear fuel chamber to an area of pressure which is lower than the fuel pressure. Fuel is supplied from tank 12 to duct 7 by a pump 11. An engine driven control valve 31 controls the supply of fluid for actuating valve 16 delivered from a control pump 33. Operation: When control valve 31 connects line 34 to line 25 the valve 16 is lifted by pressure underneath piston 21 and connects the rear fuel chamber 13 to spill line 27 via bores 20, 30 chamber 23 and passage 26. The pressure in rear chamber 13 drops abruptly and the pressure in the front chamber 6 lifts the valve needle. When the control valve connects line 25 to line 27 the valve 16 is closed by the pressure operative upstream of pressure-maintaining valve 28, the pressure in the rear fuel chamber being re-established and the valve nedle 3 engages valve seat 4.
