[Also in Division C4] 3 - Phenyl - 7 - aryltriazolylcoumarin compounds of the formula wherein X represents hydrogen or chlorine, and A represents an aryl residue in which two adjoining carbon atoms form part of the triazole ring, A optionally being substituted by a C 1-4 alkyl group and/or having two other adjoining carbon atoms forming part of a further triazole ring, are obtained by contacting a 2-hydroxy-4- aryltriazolyl-α-cyanostilbene of the formula with an acidic medium to cause ring closure. Intermediates.-2 - Methoxy - 4 - amino - α- cyanostilbene is diazotized and coupled with 2- aminonaphthalene to form an ortho-aminoazo compound which is oxidized and hydrolysed to form a 2-hydroxy-4-naphtho-triazolyl-a-cyanostilbene corresponding to Formula II.
