1,227,181. Curved railway track. J. E. CAMPBELL and E. THOMSEN. 17 May, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 23658/68. Heading E1G. In a railway track having its rails inwardly canted, e.g. by sleeper plates 22, the cant angles of the outer rail 12 at curves is increased relatively to that of the inner-curve rail 11 to reduce rail wear and failure. The increase may be effected (a) by shaping the sleeper surface 13' as shown; or (b) by inserting tapered shims or pads under the plates 22; or (c) by using modified plates 22; or (d) by using modified rails. Where the cant angle of the straight and inner-curve rails is 1 in 40, the increase required is generally 2‹45', but the increase required for any particular track may be determined experimentally by tracing the contour of worn outer-curve rails.
