Abstract

1,226,971. Foundry mould compositions. DIDIER-WERKE A.G. 8 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967], No. 11419/68. Headings C3N and C3R. A mouldable refractory composition comprises a mixture of one or more of sand, dolomite, coal and coke, with tar as the principal or predominant binder, and 2 to 4 wt. per cent of a phenoplast resin precondensate. The phenoplast may be a resole but is preferably a novolac; the amount of hexamethylene tetramine added may be in excess of that conventionally used with novolacs, the excess providing further cross-links with OH-containing compounds in the tar. In the example, 3% of a novolac resin powder containing 30%hexamethylenetetramine is intimately mixed with a primary mix of 85% fine sand and 15% raw tar. The resulting composition was used to close the tap hole of a blast furnace.
