Abstract
1,225,995. Drawing; rolling. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 10 June, 1968 [29 June, 1967], No. 27545/68. Headings B3M and B3P. A tapering die apparatus comprises at least three rotatable disc dies, means for causing relative movement between a workpiece and the dies such that the workpiece is drawn through the die orifice with a speed equal to the peripheral speed of the dies and means for maintaining the workpiece under tension. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the workpiece is mtaintained under tension and a die carriage containing the disc dies 40 is moved over the workpiece. The disc dies 40 are connected to spur gears 25 and are rotated by the simultaneous movement of racks 20, or alternatively by the movement of the die carriage over stationary racks. The die peripheries may be shaped so as to form a workpiece having a maximum diameter at its ends and a minimum diameter intermediate thereof, or a workpiece having a non-constant taper. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, a disc die 63 is rotated by a drive shaft 73 to cause by bevel gearing 71 an adjacent pair of disc dies 61, 62 to synchronously rotate therewith. A tapered workpiece of triangular section is formed by the dies 61-63 or eight dies may be arranged to form a workpiece of octagonal section. The drive means of the two embodiments may be interchanged. A mandrel may be disposed within a tubular workpiece. In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), a tubular or solid workpiece (81) is pulled from a supply reel (83) through a pretensioning device (87), and through a die apparatus (91) by a drawing mechanism (85). The workpiece is finally cut into lengths by a saw (93).
