Abstract

1,225,372. Ballasting floating structures. SANTA FE INTERNATIONAL CORP. 17 April, 1968 [13 Feb., 1968], No. 18220/68. Heading B7M. [Also in Divison E1] A semi-submersible floating crane comprises heavy duty lifting means (e.g. a slewable derrick 56 and/or shear legs 46) mounted on a platform P (which may comprise upper and lower decks 20, 22) carried a distance h above a pair of elongated hulls 12 located side-by-side but spaced apart, by a structure including stabilizing columns 26 (and may be lattice frames 24), the distance h being equal to at least the maximum anticipated wave height for operational usage, the hulls 12 having a combined displacement sufficient to float the vessel with the hulls having freeboard f, there being means to ballast the vessel (e.g. compartments 66 in the hulls) to submerge the hulls and part of the columns, which are located to reduce pitching and rolling motions. The compartments 66 may be collectively or selectively ballasted or deballasted with water by pumps 78, 80 and the appropriate manipulation of power operated valves 74, 76, 88, 90, 92, 96, 98, 102. Selective ballasting being used to counteract trim and heel angles due to loadings on the derrick 58 and shearleg 46, and to counteract pitch and roll motion due to waves. Crew accommodation &c. may be provided on the lower deck 22 and in the columns 26. Winches 35 may be provided to draw in lines 36 to anchors.
