Abstract

1,224,595. Alkenyl esters of phthalic acids. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Feb., 1970 [3 March, 1969; 15 April, 1969], Nos. 11139/69 and 19154/69. Heading C2C. Alkenyl esters of ortho-, iso- or terephthalic acid containing at least eight carbon atoms in the ester group are prepared by contacting in a substantially halide-free medium ortho-, iso- or terephthalic acid with an acyclic conjugated diene of formula in which the residual valencies are satisfied by methyl groups or hydrogen atoms, in the presence of a noble metal of Group VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table or a compound thereof, e.g. platinum, palladium and their acetates, acetyl-acetonates, #-allyl acetates and tetrakis- (triphenyl phosphine) platinum. In examples, dioctadienyl orthophthalate is prepared from butadiene and orthophthalic acid.
