Abstract
1,224,453. Blasting. BROWNING ENG. CORP. 31 March, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 16732/69. Heading B3D. [Also in Divisions B5, E1 and F4] Air can satisfactorily replace oxygen as the oxidant for the burning of liquid fuel, e.g. kerosene, supplied to the combustion chamber 45 of a burner for use in the flame drilling or channelling of a body, e.g. rock or soil, if the pressure in the chamber is greater than 150 p.s.i.g. The cutting action of the flame issuing from the outlet nozzle 47 of the burner can be improved by adding, preferably in the combustion chamber, abrasive particles to the flame gases. Allowance of axial and lateral expansion of the wall 33 of the combustion chamber relative to the outer casing 31 of the burner is facilitated by anchoring only the inner surface of the lower end of the wall to the outer casing via the nozzle and an annular closure plate. Cooling of the wall and casing is improved by a deflector 32 secured to the upper end closure of the combustion chamber. The deflector causes air to pass down the casing and then up the outside of the wall of the combustion chamber before entering the chamber.
