1,224,130. Luminescent materials and uses thereof. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Dec., 1969 [13 Dec., 1968], No. 60342/69. Heading C4S. A spinel structure luminescent material is of formula wherein 1#x#0, 0À95#y#0, 1#x+y and 1À20#p#0À80, e.g. 1#x+y#0À10, 1À05#p# 0À80 for U.V. excitation and 0À20#x+y#0, 1À20#p#0À95 for electron excitation. Excitation by U.V. radiation and electrons is instanced with emission maxima between 380 nm. and 470 nm. Maximum light output in zinc gallate is achieved when approximately 50% of Zn is replaced by Mg and similarly in respect of lithium gallate, highest light output being obtained with lithium zinc gallates. In preparation an excess of oxides is often preferred and may remain in the luminescent material. Preparation may include firing twice in air, oxygen or reducing atmosphere, e.g. H 2 -N 2 mixture at temperatures from 1100‹ to 1200‹ C. In examples lithium and/or zinc gallates have p=0À80, 0À92, 0À95, 1À0, 1À05, 1À08, 1À20 and specific phosphors are 0À95 (Zn x Mg (1-x )O).Ga 2 O 3 with x= 1, 0À9, 0À7, 0À5, 0À3, 0À1; 0À95 (Li( 1-y Mg y O (0 . 5+0 . 5y) 2À5-1À5 x Ga 2 O 3 with y = 0À18, 0À46, 0À67 0À82, 0À95; 0À95 (Li (1-x) Zn x O (0 . 5+0 . 5y) .(2À5 - 1À5x) Ga 2 O 3 with x=0À18, 0À46, 0À67, 0À82, 0À95; p(Li( 1-x-y) Zn x Mg y O 0 . 5(1+x+y) ) . (2À5-1À5x-1À5y) Ga 2 O 3 , wherein x is 0À40, 0À663, 0À288 or 0À221; y is 0À40, 0À221, 0À288 or 0À663 and p is 0À96, 0À96, 0À94 or 0À96 respectively. Applications to a luminescent screen, a gas discharge lamp, e.g. low pressure fluorescent lamp and cathode-ray tube of the cascade type for example are instanced.
